Fraction- A Portion Or Section Of A Whole

The fractions are nothing but the parts of a whole figure or number. The representation of the whole number can be a cluster of objects or a single object as a whole. Fraction is the word that originated from a Latin word, ‘Fractus’ which means, ‘broken’ in the English language.

Fraction literally means the ‘portion’ of something or a ‘section’ of something. The same is being denoted by this sign in the word ‘/’. Like a/b.
For example, 9/5 is written in a fractional form.

The first or the uppermost number that is ‘9’ will denote the numerator while the lower part will denote the denominator value.

Let’s Us Learn Two Definitions Of Fraction

What can be the two definitions of fractions? The two definitions of fractions are as follows:

Definition 1: The fraction is a representation of a numerical value that is definitive of the parts or the whole of the number.

Definition 2: A fraction can be defined as a number that represents the whole form of the actual number.

General Definition Of Fraction

Thus, generally put through, we can say that the fraction is the portion of any quantity which is the total of the whole quantity or the thing which are very much specific with an acute value.

If we start our study about fractions from the basics, we need to understand the top and below of the fraction. The top number represents the number of the parts which is selected or shaded from the whole number and the lower part represents the total number of parts or the whole number.

Example Of Fraction

Suppose, you have a number and you are required to divide the number into four parts that will be represented as x/6, and x represents the numerator which is the part of the whole number that is 6.

Suppose, the value of x is 2, which means 2/6, 2 parts are selected or shaded among the whole 6 parts. Thus, we can represent this as twice in six equal parts.

Definition Of Additive Inverse

The additive inverse with respect to a number is that value which when added to the original number or the previous number will give the value as 0.

This is the value that we add to the original number to get the yield as zero. For example, if b is a number then the additive inverse of b will be -b.

More clearly this can be represented mathematically, b + (-b) = 0

Let us take note of the following examples:

  • The additive inverse of 8 will be -8

8 + (-8) = 0

  • The additive inverse of 7 will be -7

7 + (-7) = 0

  • The additive inverse of 6 will be -6

6 + (-6) = 0

Did You Know?

  • Additive inverse is also known as the opposite of the number, or the negation of the number, or this is the changed sign of the same number.
  • The additive inverse of 0 will be 0 itself!

How Will You Find An Additive Number?

You can find an additive inverse of a number by changing the sign of the number. Suppose if the number is in the negative number then add it with the same positive number (there will not be a change in the numerical value, just change the sign).

We have successfully studied the meaning of fractions and additive inverse. To sum up, fractions are the representation of the selected part of the shaded part of a whole number. Eg: ⅚.

Additive inverse is a number that when added to the actual number yields 0 as the value.
